2020: students’ perspectives on remote foreign language learning by COVID-19 isolation

Abstract

This qualitative study examines the perspectives of students belonging to the Modern Languages Degree Program with emphasis in English and French at the Universidad of Cauca, in relation to the benefits and challenges of remote learning applied during the confinement generated by the COVID-19 pandemic between the years 2020 and 2021. The analysis highlights difficulties such as lack of linguistic immersion, problems of access to technological resources, digital distractions and the psychological impact of confinement. While some teachers were able to adapt effectively, others faced obstacles in motivating students, which affected the learning process. The research also points out imbalances in skills practice, proposing recommendations for improving future remote, online and hybrid educational models.

Este estudio de carácter cualitativo examina las perspectivas de los estudiantes pertenecientes al Programa de Licenciatura de Lenguas Modernas con énfasis en Inglés y Francés de la Universidad del Cauca, en relación con los beneficios y desafíos del aprendizaje remoto aplicado durante el confinamiento generado por la pandemia de COVID-19 entre los años 2020 y 2021. En el análisis se destacan dificultades como la falta de inmersión lingüística, problemas de acceso a recursos tecnológicos, distracciones digitales y el impacto psicológico del confinamiento. Si bien algunos docentes lograron adaptarse eficazmente, otros enfrentaron obstáculos para motivar a los estudiantes, lo que afectó el proceso de aprendizaje. La investigación también señala desequilibrios en la práctica de habilidades, proponiendo recomendaciones para mejorar futuros modelos educativos remotos, en línea e híbridos.
