dc.description.abstract To refer specifically to a population with characteristics similar to ours, the original studies evaluating maternal knowledge about complementary feeding in Latin America were included, taking into account the cultural, demographic and geographical proximity of this region. Issue reviews were also considered. A Latin American literature search was carried out on maternal knowledge in CA since 2001, at which time WHO clearly defines the time in which CA should be started, until May 1, 2016, in the following databases : Pubmed, Sciendirect, EBSCO, Google academic and Lilacs using the following keywords in English: "nutrition, complementary feeding, child, weaning, knowledge, practices, Latin America". In Spanish they were: "complementary feeding, knowledge, Latin America". We found 14 studies referring to CA knowledge in Latin American countries: Mexico (1 study) (16), Peru (12 studies) (17-28) and Ecuador (1 study) (29). All the Peruvian works are thesis, cross-sectional descriptive studies carried out between 2002 and 2016. The Mexican study corresponds to a narrative review on complementary feeding practices in children between 0 and 24 months of age that includes 7 additional studies (30-36) After analyzing the information from each of the studies, it was found that in general mothers have adequate knowledge of the importance of breastfeeding, however knowledge about complementary feeding is not enough. On the other hand, the nutritional development of the child depends in large part on the caregiver who, generally, in our culture is the mother (24). The mother's level of knowledge about CA and its practices depends on cultural factors, the recommendations of health personnel and families and people close to them (48). As mothers, the main caretakers of children from birth to early childhood, it is considered important to evaluate maternal knowledge about CA and despite the variety of studies that have evaluated this level of knowledge (21-23,25- 30), this process has not been carried out with a fully validated instrument, adapted to our environment. en_US
