Relación entre la topografía y el crecimiento de Retrophyllum rospigliosii (PILG.) C. N. page, en la zona andina de Colombia

Abstract

Retrophyllum rospigliosii es una conífera nativa con características morfológicas que sugieren un uso potencial en la reforestación comercial. Para implementar proyectos de reforestación comercial es importante evaluar la relación entre el crecimiento de la especie y factores ambientales, como la topografía. La topografía es un factor difícil de controlar a través del manejo forestal, limitándose a la elección de las zonas a reforestar, decisión que se puede tomar estimando el índice de sitio mediante variables topográficas. Así, evaluamos la relación de la topografía con el crecimiento de R. rospigliosii en la zona andina colombiana, estimando su índice de sitio mediante variables topográficas. Para lograrlo, se utilizaron los datos de crecimiento en altura de 30 parcelas de 19 años de edad y se obtuvo la información topográfica de 8 variables mediante un modelo de elevación digital generado por fotogrametría. Mediante un análisis de componentes principales se seleccionaron el aspecto, la curvatura del perfil y en planta como variables topográficas principales. Se generó la ecuación de índice de sitio usando el modelo de Bertalanffy (R2>98%), estableciendo tres clases de índice de sitio que cubren el rango entre 9,2 y 16,6 m. Las variables topográficas seleccionadas explicaron 86% de la variabilidad del índice de sitio, encontrando un mejor crecimiento en zonas con aspecto en dirección oeste y curvaturas convexas. Un crecimiento deficiente de la especie en comparación con otras especies plantadas comercialmente en la zona y la necesidad de micrositios específicos para su óptimo crecimiento supone inviable el uso de R. rospigliosii en la reforestación comercial.

Retrophyllum rospigliosii is a native conifer with morphological characteristics that suggest a potential use in commercial reforestation. To implement commercial reforestation projects, it is important to evaluate the relationship between the growth of the species and environmental factors, such as topography. Topography is a factor that is difficult to control through forest management, being limited to the choice of areas for reforestation, a decision that can be made by estimating the site index through topographic variables. Thus, we evaluated the relationship of topography with the growth of R. rospigliosii in the Colombian Andean zone, estimating its site index by means of topographic variables. To achieve this, we used height growth data from 30 19-year-old plots and obtained topographic information for 8 variables using a DEM generated by photogrammetry. Aspect, profile curvature and plant curvature were selected as principal topographic variables by means of principal component analysis. The site index equation was generated using Bertalanffy model (R2>98%), establishing three site index classes covering the range between 9.2 and 16.6 m. The selected topographic variables explained 86% of the variability of the site index, finding better growth in areas with west aspect and convex curvatures. Poor growth of the species compared to other commercially planted species in the area and the need for specific microsites for optimal growth make the use of R. rospigliosii in commercial reforestation unviable.
